Day 12 | Saturday, June 1

We went on a train ride today! We took the Niles Canyon Railway from Sunol to the town of Niles, where there are many cute shops and antique stores. The railway follows part of the actual route of the Transcontinental Railroad

On the way to Niles we rode on the diesel train.

The train depot, where the ticket office and gift shop were.

Uncle Pooge buying our tickets.

We rode on an open-sided car.

The balloons were for the people having a birthday party in the caboose behind us.

Aunt Carole and Uncle Pooge, and their friends Bob and Bonnie.

We passed the steam train we would end up riding back.

A restored vintage General Motors coach bus brought us from the train station to downtown Niles. Niles is famous, because in 1915 Charlie Chaplin made his film The Tramp at Essanay Studios in the town. Today just happened to be Charlie Chaplin Day. Several Charlies were waiting to greet us as we stepped off the bus.

For lunch we ate at the Niles Cafe. The sandwiches were yummy and we especially liked the sticker on the back of their cash register!

There was a sign in one of the antique shops telling about Charlie Chaplin and Niles.

Downtown Niles.

Along with several Charlie Chaplins, other people were also dressed up like the turn of the century. A couple even had their classic cars out! Here's a 1907 Cadillac!

We liked this sign, and think Paula Dean would agree...

The coach bus coming to pick us back up.

The yellow car is an early 20th century taxi!

Waiting for the train to come.

Out the train window.

The car we sat in on the way back. This time we were pulled by the steam train.

It was really hot today. Notice the car's thermometer? It says 102!

Uncle Pooge has a bad habit of encouraging Emily to take pictures when Michaela falls asleep...

After hanging out at home and eating dinner we stopped by the John Muir house.

Then we went and ate frozen yogurt before coming home!
